Mango, Crab, and Avocado Tostones – Tostones rellenos con Cangrejo

Tostones are crispy fried plantains. There are very common in the Caribbean and Latin American cuisine and also some parts of Africa. They are salted and often accompany meals. They can also be topped with food such as this crab salad and then served as appetizers.

I love plantains. I think I first tried them about two years ago, and I have been looking for new ways to prepare them ever since. I have never tried tostones before or crab salad for that matter. I missed out big time, the tostones and the brab salad are really tasty. I loved both and the combination of the crispy plantains with the crab salad was amazing!!! The tostones are already tasty on their own. They even look pretty like yellow flowers. But adding this delicious crab salad to these crispy plantains… ohh, it’s so good.    


Crab Salad

  • 8 oz / 226 g cooked crab meat, diced
  • pulp of 1 avocado, diced
  • pulp of 1 mango, diced
  • 2-3 tbsp finely chopped red onion
  • lemon juice
  • salt, to taste
  • cumin, to taste
  • garlic powder, to taste


  • 3-4 green or greenish-yellowish plantains
  • oil for frying
  • salt


In a bowl, combine the diced crab meat, diced avocado, and the diced mango. Add a little lemon juice and season  to taste with salt, cumin, and garlic powder. Set aside.

Peel the plantains and cut them into 1 inch / 2.5 cm thick slices. Add oil to a frying pan. You want about 1/2 inch / 1.25 cm of oil in the pan. Fry the plantain pieces on one side until they start to turn yellow. Then flip them and cook them from the other side until they turn yellow on this side as well. Take the plantain slices out of the pan and mash them until they’re flat.  You can use the bottom of a pan to mash the plantains.

Then fry the flat plantain slices again in a little oil until they become golden brown. Take them out of the pan and place them on kitchen paper to soak up any excess oil. Season them with a little salt.

Place the tostones on plates and top them with the crab salad. Serve immediately.

Tostones (knusprig gebratene Kochbanane) mit Krabbenfleisch, Avocado und Mango



  • 8 oz / 226 g gekochtes Krabbenfleisch, klein geschnitten
  • Fruchtfleisch von 1-2 Avocados, gewürfelt
  • Fruchtfleisch von 1-2 mangos, gewürfelt
  • 2-3 EL klein gewürfelte rote Zwiebel
  • Zitronensaft
  • Salz, nach Geschmack
  • Kreuzkümmel, nach Geschmack
  • Knoblauchpulver, nach Geschmack


  • 3-4 grüne oder grün-gelbe Kochbananen (Plantains)
  • Öl zum Braten
  • Salz


Das Krabbenfleisch, Avocadowürfel und die Mangowürfel in einer Schüssel vermischen. Ein wenig Zitronensaft hinzufügen und mit Salz, Kreuzkümmel und Knoblauchpulver abschmecken. Den Salat beiseite stellen.

Die Kochbananen schälen und in ca. 2, 5 cm dicke Scheiben schneiden. Öl (ca. 1,25 cm in der Pfanne) in einer Pfanne erhitzen, die Kochbananenstücke sollen nur bis zur Hälfte im Öl eingetaucht sein. Die Kochbananenstücke im Öl braten bis sie gelb werden. Dann wenden und von der anderen Seite braten bis auch diese Seite gelb wird. Die Stücke aus der Pfanne nehmen, auf eine Arbeitsfläche legen und platt drücken. Dafür eignet sich die Unterseite einer Pfanne.

Die flachen Kochbananenscheiben in ein wenig Öl von beiden Seiten goldbraun braten. Aus der Pfanne nehmen und auf Küchenpapier legen. Mit ein wenig Salz bestreuen.  

Die Tostones auf Teller legen und den Krabbensalat darauf verteilen. Sofort servieren.

    here we go! another recipe that I will have to do soon. love love love the idea of fried plantains and crab meat. besides, tusen tack for teaching me how to fry plantains (available also in Sweden). I know I could have googled it but sometimes we just need the right inspiration to go and try something new. amazing presentation as well.

    I just drooled, and no kidding! I love fried plantains and what a great idea to top with crab/mango/avocado. All the sudden it becomes very refreshing and I know I can’t stop eating it… quite addicting for sure! Really looks and sounds delish!!
